Welcome to the 2008-2009 School Year!

I am very excited to be a new member of the Ann Arbor Public Schools music team at Pioneer High School. The past two months has been quite wonderful for me. In addition to making my way across the states, I found time to reconnect with old friends, make some new ones, and also touch base with my family.

I have been working diligently at Pioneer over the past month preparing for this next chapter in my teaching career. Taking inventory, preparing repertoire, meeting parents, students, and coworkers, and finding time to enjoy my new location has been very rewarding.

For Parents/Students: The orchestras at Pioneer High School have a web site, but it is currently not up and running while we wait to connect the site to the district server. I anticipate the site being down for a few weeks, so I urge all students and parents to be patient. The site will be back very soon, and it will look terrific!

I would like to express many thanks to Andrea Martilla, David Leach, Ken Westerman, Michael White, Robin and Paul Bailey, Gabe Villasurda, M.J. Quigley Young, and many others who have helped make my transition to Ann Arbor so welcoming.

Hello Friends,

I am off to Michigan in a few short days. My cell # will remain the same, and you can always email me at jonathan@jonathanglawe.org. For those who might need my address, I will send it to you via email. I hope you are having a pleasant summer. Cheers! -JG

Welcome to the busy final week of the term! Allow me to share with you some events:

Tonight, the Campus Orchestra will be playing the Magnificat by Durante in Beall Hall with the Repertiore Singers at 8pm. We are looking forward to sharing the stage with them again.

Today was my final conducting class at the University. I need to express my deepest thanks to Prof. Robert Ponto for working with me these past few years. I hope to continue my conducting studies when I get to Ann Arbor.

On Saturday, I will be teaching a masterclass at the U of Oregon for cellists who are interested in playing jazz. The students participating are between ages four and ten, and participate in the local Suzuki school. It should be a lot of fun!

Next Tuesday is the deadline for my Masters document, A Comprehensive Jazz Curriculum for the String Student. I have discovered through this four year process that I have learned a lot, but there is much, much more to work to be done. I am really looking forward to sharing with you my findings, and continuing to explore new directions in string education.

It is an exciting time, and I do hope we connect soon.

Many thanks to the University Symphony for the great rehearsal on Tchaik 4 yesterday! I always have a great time when I work with your ensemble. I am looking forward to the concert this weekend.

On Wednesday, May 22 at 8pm in Beall Hall we will be performing the Prelude from the Holberg Suite by Grieg, Of Glorious Plumage by Richard Meyer, Light Music for Strings by Alan Rawsthorne, and the Magnificat by Durante with chorus. The Magnificat will be performed again on Thursday, June 5th in Beall at 8pm.

We hope to see you there! - JG

I am pleased to announce that I have accepted an orchestra teaching position at Pioneer High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan for the 2008-2009 school year (and hopefully for many years beyond). I flew out to Ann Arbor last week to interview, and I had a chance to work with this fantastic group of students. Not only do they have the facility to play music at a very high level, but you can tell they simply love to play. I am thrilled to teach in such a fantastic community, and I am eager to meet the parents, students, and my fellow teachers.

In preparation for this opportunity, I am in the process of organizing the logistical aspects of moving across the country. As of now, it appears I will be making a home in Ann Arbor during the second week of July.

I thank you all for your support during my job hunt, and I look forward to sharing with you many more positive experiences in music via Pioneer High School.

Clinic information has been posted under the links page.

03.27.08

Hello String Enthusiasts,

The clinic I did last night entitled A "Comprehensive" Jazz Curriculum for the String Student on the University of Kansas campus was a huge success. Thank you for the overwhelming turnout! You were a terrific audience, and I hope I gave you some ideas that you can incorporate into your teaching at all levels right away. If you would like to talk in more detail about any of the demonstrations, do not hesitate to call or email me.

As some of you requested, I will post the historical handout on my website when I get a chance, and I will also post additional information about the curriculum in early June when the majority of my research will be complete. I hope to share my results at IAJE and National ASTA in the next few years. I appreciate your interest.

If you have any suggestions for a location where I could bring this clinic, please let me know.

I hope you are all doing well.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Glawe

Many Thanks to Danny Seidenberg for coming down to Eugene yesterday and coaching the Jazz Strings Project! We learned a lot, and we look forward to working with him again in the near future.

I am now preparing for my trip to National ASTA next week in Albuquerque, as well as my trip to Lawrence, Kansas during the last week of March to present a clinic on my thesis topic:

The Beethoven Emperor Concerto went really well yesterday. BoKyung and the UO Concerto Orchestra played with a lot of gusto, and it was well received by the audience. I hope to post a rehearsal and performance video soon. I look forward to my next conducting opportunity with Campus Orchestra on March 4th.

This week, I am putting the finishing touches on some of my jazz charts that will be in my thesis project. It will be nice to get the copyright process over with, so I can simply focus on the lesson plans to use with the units. I look forward to getting feedback from my peers both locally, and at National ASTA in 2 weeks.

All for now. Talk to you soon!

-Jonathan Glawe

02.09.08

Hello Everyone,

I am thrilled to announce that Danny Seidenberg will be coming down to Eugene to coach the Jazz Strings Project on February 22nd. If you happen to be in the area, you are more than welcome to stop by and observe. We meet in room 173 of the music building on Fridays at 1pm.

My thesis is coming along nicely. I am about 6 units into my method project, and I am just now tightening everything up before I receive feedback from Danny, Martin Norgaard, and others. It is an exciting time.

Next weekend, I will be conducting the UO Concerto Orchestra in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto featuring BoKyung Lee on piano. --- Saturday, February 16th at 1:30pm in Beall Hall.

As always, I look forward to connecting with you again soon. -- JTG

Hello Friends,

The Spring term has gotten off to a terrific start at the U of Oregon. I am currently conducting the Campus Orchestra in works by Mozart, Quincy Porter, and a fiddle tune called Styres Rally by Alexander Stafford. In addition, the Jazz Strings Project has been working on tunes by Miles Davis, a contrafact of a Mingus tune, and will be working on an arrangement I have of a tune on Eddie South's Dark Angel of the Violin album. If you do not know this record, YOU SHOULD! Look into it. JSP will also be performing on the Sound Bytes series as put on by Brian McWhorter at the U of Oregon. We will be doing a tribute to the music of John Zorn's Masada String Trio. It should be a blast, and I hope many of you can come!

I am gearing up for my trip to Albuquerque for the ASTA conference next month. I am looking forward to connection to fellow string teachers about my curriculum project. I also am preparing for my trip to Kansas in March, when I will be doing a clinic concerning my Jazz Strings Curriculum. I am very much looking forward to visiting Lawrence, and I hope to connect with as many friends and colleagues as possible.

I have updated my links page with a few people I have met recently who I think anyone in string education should know. Martin Norgaard, Daryl Silberman, and Mark Chung. These folks are extraordinary resources, and I encourage you all to look into bringing them to your district.

Time to dig into my Beethoven Emperor score with a cup of tea. Sounds like the perfect way to whind down from a wonderful day. Until next time,

-Jonathan Glawe

Dear Friends, Family, and Colleagues,

Best wishes to you on a happy New Year! I look forward to connecting with you in the near future. Cheers!

Greetings!

It has been an exciting few months in Eugene. In addition to conducting a concert for the Campus Orchestra, I have also been rehearsing Beethoven's Emperor Concerto with pianist Bokyung Lee. With a terrific coaching from Prof. Dean Kramer in early December, we have set ourselves up to have a terrific performance on February 16th in Beall Hall.

Last Friday, I turned in the preparation paperwork for my thesis project that is to come over the next 2 terms. Though I cannot provide specific details for protection of the product, I can tell you that it involves quantitative research in jazz strings education with the ultimate goal of publication. I have a terrific start, and with the help of professors and colleagues next term, I will be putting the finishing touches on this project which has been a focus of mine for over 3 years.

I will be traveling to Lawrence, Kansas on during the last week of March to recieve feedback on the project from some fellow string teachers and professors. I will be doing a clinic of jazz string playing while I am there, and I will be sure to invite all of you to come participate!

I have also begun a job search for the 2008-2009 school year. If you happen to hear of any jobs in string education, please pass them along my way. I will continue developing my teaching portfolio at the beginning of the new year.

I will be traveling to London, Ontario from Dec. 18-31st, and will be out of cell phone reach. If you need to speak with me, just drop me an email. Happy Holidays to you, and I look forward to speaking with you again soon. -JG

Hello Friends,

Oregon's Fall term has been moving along quite nicely. I have many performances coming up that I would like to share with you. Next Sunday at 3pm in Beall Hall, the UO Symphony will be performing works by Berlioz, Theofanidis, Schumann- with cellist Steve Pologe, Gounod, and Britten. The program is varied and fun, and I am looking forward to it!

On November 14th at 8pm, I will be conducting the UO Campus Orchestra in the first movement of Mendelssohn's String Symphony IX, Acht Stucke by Paul Hindemith, the Intermezzo from Cavaleria Rusticana by Pietro Mascagni, and Irish Suite for Strings by Arthur Duff. I have also just agreed to conduct Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat ( the Emperor Concerto) for a doctoral recital in January. More details will be posted about that soon.

The Jazz Strings Project will be performing on November 30th at the UO Library at 4pm. We are first on the program, and will be performing our own arrangement of Black Orpheus.

I hope you are well, and please send me your thoughts. I would love to hear about how you are doing. - JG

It is official. The 2007-2008 school year has begun at the U of Oregon! I am very much looking forward to a great year of making music, digging deep into research projects, and making positive connections with my peers. Some highlights of this Fall include directing the Campus Orchestra, playing the Jesse Jones piano quintet, and rehearsing and performing with the Jazz Strings Project. Though I will be gigging regularly on the double bass, conducting and research will be at the forefront of my studies. In addition, I will be taking a History of Opera class, conducting lessons with Prof. Robert Ponto, and a class called Curricular Strategies of Music Education with Dr. Harry Price.

I have updated my calendar with some performance dates. If you happen to be in the Eugene area, it would be great if you could stop by. In the meantime, grab your sweaters! - JG

08.21.07

Summer session at UO has officially ended, though in some ways the greatest summer projects for me are yet to come! I have a new page on my site: http://www.jonathanglawe.org/teachingportfolio.htm

This is a summary of my teaching experiences. It includes writing samples, a grading system for a high school orchestra, a handbook for a high school orchestra, conducting and rehearsing footage, and much more. Feedback is greatly appreciated, as I experimented with using Adobe Flash, a new program for me.

It is never too soon for me to begin looking into teaching opportunities for the 2008-2009 school year, so if you hear of any possibilities, please let me know. I hope you are enjoying your August. - JG

08.07.07

Hello Friends,

I hope you are having a plentiful summer. August is here, and there is plenty of time left to enjoy some sunshine! At the end of UO summer session next week, I will be redirecting my focus from research to writing about the topic of jazz strings. My focus for August and September is to put together the workbook for the Jazz Strings Project to use in 2007-2008. The possible directions of this ensemble are limitless, and researching those possibilities has been very fun me. I am eager to share my ideas with my terrific string colleagues in the fall.

Please keep me posted on your new adventures.- JG

Buongiorno!

Over the past month, I have had many wonderful musical and life experiences both in the states and abroad. I am so thrilled to be given the opportunity to travel while doing what I love, and I appreciate everyone who contributed to that happening! Shortly, I will be posting reflections in the form of video, slideshow, and free-writing, but I wanted to immediately share with you a video I put together with my friend Dylan Spielvogel in Connecticut about 3 weeks ago. It was an exploration of a Nick Drake tune, "Things Behind the Sun". I hope you enjoy! As always, check back when you can, and lets be in touch! - Jonathan Glawe

Greetings Friends,

I am off for the tour of Italy with American Chamber Orchestra! If you would like to see our itinerary, please check out my calendar link. Have a terrific July, and I look forward to catching up with you soon. - Jonathan

06.24.07

Hello Dear Friends,

My brief summer vacation is about to come to an end. This week, I have enjoyed some nice long bike rides, great food, and needed down time. Tomorrow, however, the emersion into music will begin again! I will be taking an intense jazz improv class in Eugene with Mike Denny before I head to to New York to play music with some old friends, and rehearse with American Chamber Orchestra for the Italy tour. Finally, on July 10, ACO is off on the tour to Italy!

Though I was on break this week, I did manage to write a few more modal etudes for the Jazz Strings Project. I am looking forward to the next 12 months, as this project molds together. I will be sure to keep you posted. Thanks, as always, for your endless support!

06.09.07

Thanks to everyone who came to the bass recital on Thursday evening! This audience was the largest we have had by far, and we appreciate your support. I felt everyone played quite well, and with the help of our fearless leader, Tyler Abbott, I think we can call the evening very successful.

I have really enjoyed playing the Bartok Romanian Dances. They are pieces that I have admired for years, and to finally get the chance to perform them was a great feeling. There is a short video of the performance highlights under the sound/video recordings link. Have a great weekend! Mine will be spent playing bepop scales around the cykle of 4ths. :)

06.05.07

Hello Everyone!

I am pleased to announce the development of the Jazz Strings Project at UO for the 2007- 2008 school year! I will be posting more information about the project as it becomes available to me. Click on our flier to the right to see what it is all about. Thanks as always for your support!

06.01.07

Greetings!

Tonight will be a very fun evening at the University of Oregon. The Oregon Wind Ensemble will be performing UFO (Michael Daugherty) with well-known percussionist Sean Wagoner. This piece is rich with colors, textures, and character. Sean does a wonderful job, and I hope you can catch the show at 8 PM in Beall Hall.

This past week, I have been working intensely on some jazz string arrangements and etudes for middle school orchestra. The current tune, Memories of You, is inspired by Ray Brown's cello version. I particularly like the accompaniment in this recording, and am trying to create the same vibe within a string orchestra. Some etudes I am working on include swinging pentatonics, and modal stuff for the really young guys. The Jazz String Project is nearly half complete, with big plans to present on the topic in May 2008. I'll be sure to keep you posted!

05.27.07

Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

I hope you all have safe travels, and plenty of time to rest. I have had a few terrific weeks of musical experiences. Highlights include: the Renee Fleming set, Rachmaninoff Symphonic Dances at UO, and Desert Roads with OWE. I am now turning my attention back to transcribing and arranging jazz tunes for string orchestra. Also I am happy to share that I have officially been offered the Campus Orchestra position at U of Oregon for the 2007-2008 school year. This is an ensemble made up of college string players who are either preparing for the main orchestra, or wanting to continue playing, even if they are not music majors. I am looking forward to providing a positive environment for these students to continue growing in their musical experience.

Italy Update: On July 4th, I will be traveling to Minneapolis to visit my sister before heading to New York for ACO rehearsals on July 7th. We then depart for Italy on July 10th, and will be there until July 21st. I am very excited for this opportunity to play with ACO (on an authentic Italian bass- mmm! ), but even more excited to experience the culture of Italy.

As always, drop me a line with your adventures. I would love to hear from you!

05.20.07

Over the next week or so, my website will be getting a major overhaul (rebuilt using CSS). All links should still be working, but each page might look a bit different. I'll keep you posted.

05.19.07

I am right in the middle of a very fun musical month! Last week, I performed with the Eugene Symphony for the Renee Fleming and Shannon Lee sets, and will be performing this week with the UO Symphony on Sunday, the Corvallis Symphony on Tuesday, the UO Wind Ensemble on Wednesday, and a Corvallis High School Choir on Thursday. The end of the year is fast approaching, and soon I will be preparing for Italy! I'll keep you posted. Please check back. Thank you for your complete support!
